Job Description:

The Vice President for Finance and Administration division is seeking qualified individuals for the position of Manager, Building Trades Shop within the Facilities Management department.

Established in 1804, OHIO University is the oldest public institution of higher learning in the state of Ohio & the first in the Northwest Territory. Located in the scenic Appalachian foothills, its classic residential campus in 1. AccouAthens, Ohio, is one of the most attractive in the nation.

The Manager, Building Trades directs the day-to-day operations of the environmental services, painters, sheet metal, carpentry, carpet/tile, and relief maintenance employees for Facilities Management. The position reports to the Associate Director of Building Trades.
• Ensures productivity of staff with broad discretion to schedule employees for efficacy as related to assigned work.
• Accountable for evaluating, training, performance management, coaching, mentoring and technical expertise of all assigned employees.
• Manages and maintains records and data entry related to payroll for assigned employees,
• Coordinates the acquisition of supplies and materials to complete work activities via shop stock, warehouse, storeroom and/or local suppliers
• Complies with all laws, University policies and procedures, safety regulations and Collective Bargaining agreement.
• Represent Facilities Management’s interests in building and utility infrastructure matters with senior administrators, faculty, union officials, governmental officials, regulators, contractors, architects, engineers, project managers, energy purveyors and others.
• Develop shop work and safety rules specific to area supervised and assist in development of departmental policies and procedures.
• Assist and cooperate/team with other members of the Facilities Management and the University as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned by higher level management and serves as duty officer/technical support on a scheduled basis to handle after hour emergency situations.
• Inspects facilities for needed maintenance work, reviews work orders, takes customer complaints and other requests for service with goal of providing quality customer service campus-wide.
• Display leadership that results in teamwork, customer focus, innovation and continuous process improvement within the organization.

Other duties include:
1) Lead and Supervise Building Trades Team
a. Display leadership that results in teamwork, customer focus, innovation, and continuous process improvement within their organization
b. Oversees and manages budget to ensure operates within allocated resources.
c. Ensures productivity of staff with broad discretion to schedule employees for efficacy as related to assigned work.
d. Evaluate, train, coach, and mentor employees.
e. Manages and maintains records and data entry related to payroll for assigned employees.
f. Coordinates the acquisition of supplies and materials to complete work activities via shop stock, warehouse, storeroom and/or local suppliers.
g. Complies with all laws, University policies and procedures, safety regulations and Collective Bargaining agreement.
h. Represent Facilities Management’s interests in building matters with senior administrators, faculty, union officials, governmental officials, regulators, contractors, architects, engineers, project managers, energy purveyors and others.
i. Develop shop work and safety rules specific to area supervised and assist in development departmental policies and procedures.
j. Serves as duty officer/technical support on scheduled basis to handle after hour emergency situations.
2) Technical Assistance
a. Advise/Review plans for building construction and renovation projects; makes recommendations on building systems and appropriate technology to ensure efficient facility maintenance and operations.
b. Review and recommend maintenance supply and equipment purchases to ensure efficient facility maintenance and operations.
a. Accountable for use of Computerized Maintenance Management System, within the department’s approved procedures and processes, of listed lower level managers and teams.
3) Examine work orders and converse with customers and technicians to detect equipment problems and implement corrective actions.
a. Effectively manage internal and external communications with other members of Facilities Management, customers, vendors, and technicians for scheduled in-house and contract work.
b. Reviews pertinent building operation & maintenance data and adjust work processes to optimize efficiency and costs of the organization.
c. Manages the execution of small contracts; Ensures contracted work is fully complete and meets of needs of the campus community.

Will supervise approximately 14 bargaining unit personnel. May supervise student employees and/or interns.

Successful candidate should be knowledgeable in the use of Microsoft Office suite, or similar, including Outlook, Excel,PowerPoint and Word. Additionally, with training and familiarization, should be able to access and use web and cloud based software for other specialty applications.

Will frequently be in noisy and dusty environments such as mechanical room, construction areas, utility tunnels, crawl space and utility plant areas that at times may be hot or cold.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

• Associate’s degree, or vocational or technical school training.
• Minimum of 3 years of supervisory experience.
• More than 8 years of related work experience in building trades area.

**An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.

• Driver’s License valid in the Continental US required.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree
• Experience with multiple building systems (Plumbing, Electrical, HVAC, Life Safety, etc.) preferred.
• More than 2 years extensive knowledge and experience required in the management of building and infrastructure systems and distribution in a campus, University or similar setting.
