Job Description:

OHIO University is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Assistant Director of Utilities within the Facilities Management department.

Established in 1804, OHIO University is the oldest public institution of higher learning in the state of Ohio and the first in the Northwest Territory. Located in the scenic Appalachian foothills, its classic residential campus in Athens, Ohio, is one of the most attractive in the nation.

The Assistant Director of Utilities oversees the day-to-day operations of the Plumbing, Tunnel, HVAC, HVAC Controls, Electric and Preventive Maintenance Shops.
Job Duties:
1. Lead and supervise Utilities team.
a. Display leadership that results in teamwork, customer focus, innovation, and continuous process improvement within their organization.
b. Inspects facility related utility systems for needed maintenance work, recommends solutions, reviews work orders, takes customer complaints, and other requests for service with goal of providing quality customer service campus-wide.
c. Oversees and manages budget to ensure building team operates within allocated resources.
d. Ensures productivity of staff with broad discretion to schedule employees for efficacy as related to assigned work.
e. Evaluate, train, coach and mentor lower level managers and their employees.
f. Manages and maintains records and data entry related to payroll for assigned employees.
g. Coordinates the acquisition of supplies and materials to complete work activities via shop stock, warehouse, storeroom and/or local suppliers.
h. Complies with all laws, University policies and procedures, safety regulations and Collective Bargaining agreement.
i. Represent Facility Management’s interests in building matters with senior administrators, faculty, union officials, governmental officials, regulators, contractors, architects, engineers, project managers, energy purveyors and others.
j. Develop shop work and safety rules specific to area supervised and assist in development of departmental policies and procedures.
k. Serves as duty officer/technical support on a scheduled basis to handle after hour emergency situations.
2. Technical Assistance
a. Advise/Review plans for building construction and renovation projects; makes recommendations on building systems and appropriate technology to ensure efficient facility maintenance and operations.
b. Review and recommend maintenance supply and equipment purchases to ensure efficient facility maintenance and operations.
c. Accountable for use of Computerized Maintenance Management System, within the department’s approved procedures and processes, of listed lower level managers and teams.
3. Communications
a. Effectively manage internal and external communications with other members of Facilities Management, customers, vendors and technicians for scheduled in-house and contract work.
4. Small Contracts
a. Manages the execution of small contracts for the utilities shops.
b. Maintain list of approved contractors and engage appropriately for assessment and quotes.
c. Ensure contracted work is fully complete and meets the needs of the campus community.

Will supervise up to 3 managers and associated bargaining unit personnel. May supervise student employees and/or interns.

Successful candidate must be knowledgeable in the use of Microsoft Office suite or similar, including Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and Word. Additionally, with training and familiarization, should be able to access and use web and cloud based software for other specialty applications.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:
• Associate’s degree, vocational or technical school degree in related field.
• A minimum of six years of work related experience.
• At least one year supervisory or managerial experience.
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.
Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree

• More than 8 years extensive knowledge and experience are required in the management of building and infrastructure systems and distribution in a campus, university or similar setting. Experience with district energy systems preferred.
