Position Summary:

Based at OPW's Midland Manufacturing facility in Skokie, IL (www.midlandmfg.com), this position selects and applies extensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices is broad areas of assignment and related fields. Responsible for making decisions on engineering problems and methods having an important effect on major company programs.

Essential Functions:

  1. Research - using mathematical modeling/or calculations to work out whether new developments and innovations would work and/or be cost effective.
  2. Design - turning enquiry ideas into technical plans.
  3. Testing – setting up, collecting and analyzing data of tests on components.
  4. Reporting - writing or presenting reports for project managers and clients.
  5. Lead - directs the efforts of engineers, designers, technicians or other team members to assure successful project completion.  Will often be required to multitask and coordinate multiple large projects simultaneously.
  6. Interface with customers, internally and externally, on technical details and project goals.
  7. May be assigned product or manufacturing engineering responsibilities to resolve product or manufacturing problems on major product lines.  Solve individually or as part of a group as job duties require.  May lead such problem-solving activities.
  8. Accountable for Sarbanes-Oxley compliance in assigned area. Responsible for design and operating effectiveness of internal controls, including a self-assessment and report to management.
  9. Accountable for developing and monitoring processes and practices necessary for legal and ethical compliance in assigned area.
  10. Hands-on work on shop floor, as job requires.

Required Skills

Required Qualifications:

  1. Working knowledge of  3-D CAD programs –ProEngineer Wildfire 3.0 or newer.
  2. Knowledgeable with Product Data Management software, preferably Windchill PDM.
  3. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  4. Working knowledge of FEA and (finite element analysis) and CFD (computational fluid dynamics) preferred.
  5. Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  6. Ability to work collaboratively and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers.
  7. Ability to effectively problem-solve using problem solving tools and techniques (A3, fishbone, root cause, 5-Whys)
  8. Excellent communication, interpersonal and customer service skills.
  9. Ability to facilitate activities necessary to a project’s completion.

Language Skills:

Ability to read, write, verbalize and comprehend instructions and correspondence at the highest levels in the English language.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and group situations to customers, clients, and other team members.  Conflict resolution skills.  Excellent interpersonal skills.  Excellent verbal and customer service skills.

Mathematical Skills:

Must have mathematical skills equivalent to those required under degree requirement.

Physical Demands: 

Standing, Walking, Sitting, Lifting, Carrying, Balancing, Stooping, Reaching, Handling, Feeling, Talking, Hearing, Acuity-Far, Acuity-Near, Depth Perception, and Field of Vision.  May require a combination of sitting, standing, and walking.  May require lifting up to 50 pounds.

Environment/Atmospheric Conditions:

Must be able to work in an office environment as well as a shop environment as job duties require.  May be exposed to loud operating machinery, cold temperatures, chemicals, and vapors.

Machines, Tools Equipment, Software:

Personal computer, fax machine, copy machine, other office equipment, Microsoft Office, PowerPoint.  May minimally operate shop equipment such as assembly presses, manual and CNC machines, basic hand tools.

Required Experience
  1. Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree required.
  2. Four or more years of professional experience with project leadership responsibilities required.
  3. Four or more years of hands-on engineering or product design is required.
  4. Four or more years of experience in the railroad industry is required.
  5. Four or more years experience in a manufacturing environment is preferred.
  6. Four or more years of experience in the hydraulics design is preferred.
