Histo Tech/Histologist
 
GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES:           
By preparing tissue specimens for microscopic examination and diagnosis by pathologists; this position serves the patient, the physician and other staff members. 
 
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: (This list may not include all of the duties assigned)
1.     Prepares tissue specimens for processing by performing a gross dictation using established protocols and procedures. Embeds processed tissue into paraffin.
2.     Sections tissue specimens, using microtome knife, following established standards and procedures, in preparation for slide staining.
3.     Stain and coverslip specimen slides, following established standards and procedures. 
4.     Performs H&E stain and some basic special staining procedures.
5.     Filing of paraffin blocks and slides.
6.     Responsible for being familiar with and working to be in compliance with all regulatory standards and requirements that applies to his/her work area. As part of the institution’s ongoing quality improvement effort, the employee should pursue opportunities to resolve identified problems and improve patient care.
7.     Responsible for being familiar with safety policies and procedures in relation to their work areas and will comply with these policies. 
8.     Performs routine preventative instrument maintenance according to manufacture guidelines.
9.     Prepares reagents for department use.
10. Performs other duties as assigned.
 

Job Requirements:

Performance Requirements:
The Histo Tech will have knowledge of clinical laboratory procedures, standards and tests to perform quality control checks. Skill in preparing tissue slides for pathologists. Skill in anticipating and reacting calmly to emergency situations. Skill in developing and maintaining department quality assurance. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public. Ability to follow written protocols. Ability to communicate clearly.
 
Education:     Minimum two-year degree from an accredited program.
Experience:   1-2 years of experience as a Medical Lab Technician.
Certification:  HT ASCP Certification required
